Two Weeks Previously
Though with a more serious face than before, Junko was able to spend the rest of the day with Mizu after the autopsy had been completed. The other squad members, reports in hand, were on their way and nothing lie before them afterward that was more strenuous than usual. Typically she would be back to her usual bouncy nature yet the image of the Captain's face would not leave her. There was something that was concerning him deeply, yet as he typically did he would keep such matters to himself. Bright eyes wandering down to the badge she donned, sheepish fingers removed the wooden gift and tucked it away in her pocket. It would be returned to the Captain as soon as he arrived. With Omoni's possible then definite departure Junko had never considered who would take her place. Accepting the badge and post had been unofficial in every way and had been simply both of their ways of coping. Accepting the position and rooting Omoni on was all she had been capable of at the time. The feeling had now faded and a fraudulent sensation began to take its place.
Surprised once more she received the promotion officially when Yu returned to Fourth Division. Devoid of any type of celebration or even excitement the role was given to her before the Captain once again retreated into solitude. Junko didn't require a pat on the back from him over the promotion. It had hurt her slightly however that the man seemed to have arrived at such a conclusion because it was a seemingly obvious choice or he had no other and simply needed to fill the spot. Although she wished to receive the same confidence that Omoni had displayed, she could not truly fault Yu. He had lost the one person in the squad who had almost constantly been at his side. Junko had carried a heavy heart over her loss despite seeing her no more or less with her now in a different Division. She couldn't allow herself to let both of their aches bar her from doing her best.
Present Day
Shusuke was watching as Junko inspected his wrist carefully. She had told him repeatedly it was a minor injury that he was only prolonging by not allowing it to rest. Sitting back in her chair with a bemused look on her face as he complained she voiced her thoughts on the matter. Though her tone was sharp, when she reached for him once more to finish with the examination she couldn't help but give a small smile. One of the few fellow Shinigami she could now call a friend. The man had pushed her-with very little convincing necessary- to unwind and socialize more. Her time had been spent training as well as cooped up in exam rooms, conference rooms or her new office. Even before she had focused completely on her work. The idea of having a friend was far from her mind. Although she viewed Mizu fondly, it was a relationship that centered around their work. She clicked her tongue at the thought. So much time spent training him yet not near enough getting to know him better. That would change soon enough.
Glancing back up at Shusuke she gave his wrist a light smack. "I declare you fully healed," With that she let him go, a smile on her face as she pushed her chair away from him and began to write in his chart. When he spoke her gaze returned to his face, her lips pressed together tightly. Concern rolled across her face unmasked. There was much about the situation she found unsettling, but all the more it made for an even busier day. Undoubtedly her Captain would be calling for her and others soon for their assignments. She worried for the man. Not due to a weakness she saw in him, just a simple care for his well-being and her inability to understand the reason why he was being forced.
Making herself smile she gave a nod to his words. Ninth had their hands full as well practically taking care of the entire event by themselves. Both of them were looking down on a very long and difficult day. "Good luck on your duties today and don't work too hard. We'll have to meet after the games for a drink," She gave him a small wave as he let himself out, now very familiar with her office and Fourth's barracks.
Turning back to the file on her desk she set on finishing with it when the door's closing was halted. The nurse appeared a bit flustered, though her relayed message was clear. Signing off on the paperwork she slammed the folder shut, handing it to the nurse on her way out of the room with a grateful bow of her head. Making her way to the lobby she nearly bumped Mizu who arrived at the same time as she, her gaze focused on the intensity of their Captain's face. Her face straightened uncomfortably again, though now it was guilt rising. Though feeling it necessary to offer her aid to him whenever she had given him a wide berth the last couple weeks in preparation for the games. There were no words of confidence or comfort she could offer the man. He needed to think and prepare on his own. Or so she thought. Perhaps she should have approached him before that day. It was difficult for her to know the proper actions in certain situations with her new position.
Body rigid, full attention on the Captain as he spoke. His first words were of no surprise and a relief to hear. Preparations had been made, leaving them only to focus on their work rather than setting up as well. However, his next warning made her face grim once more. Was he preparing to not return himself? Was he concerned that they would not survive an assignment in the World of the Living? Junko steeled herself in the face of his fears. Unlike Omoni she had no experience in the field, despite wishing for such for so many years. There was no certainty in her own self that she would survive such a situation yet she would not allow these fears to be shown to Yu.
"Yes, si-" cut off from her affirmation, preparing for Yu to leave before them, a blue-haired man rushed in loudly. Two shinigami accompanied him, bound by Kido to preserve them the best he could. Eyeing the barriers that were placed around the two she examined them from where she stood as nurses bounded forward with gurneys. Using their own techniques to allow the man to release the shields that had helped sustain the two men's lives, they worked alongside him as he was told when to deconstruct his work as it was replaced by theirs. The men were promptly rushed away to a nearby trauma room.
A look of annoyance was obvious on Yu's face. Junko felt it somewhat as well, curious how and why such extensive injuries would happen before the brutal games even began. Moving closer to the Captain she put her hand out, stopping him from approaching. "Captain, this is my part as well. Please allow us to attend to them so you are not late. I assure you Mizu-kun and I will both be at our stations before the games have started,"
Her eyes bore into him, begging for his faith in this moment. However there was no time to await his reply for any of them and with that she bowed deeply before turning, taking a light hold of Mizu's elbow and pulling him along with her for a moment before rushing after the nurses who had just departed. Teeth grit as she made her way down the hallway, her mouth felt like it wouldn't be possible to open with how tense her jaw had become. She hadn't exactly issued orders or anything to that extent but it had felt somewhat disrespectful to have behaved toward her Captain the way she had. As she approached the man on the gurney furthest from the door, the Lieutenant of Fifth it appeared, she took a deep breath. There was no time for any of them to worry about such things. If he wished to reprimand her for her behavior perhaps he would march in and do so before taking over right at that moment. But more likely he would wait until after the games. Leaving only one course of action-to finish the task ahead of her.
Standing between the wall and the gurney she glanced up to watch Mizu follow her within. Directing him toward the other patient, placing him as she was with the wall and bed and each side to allow him to see her actions. Calling for more nurses she assured the both of them had five on their sides. It wasn't an extremely complicated procedure for anyone of their level, though Junko was unsure if Mizu was familiar with what they were about to do and why it was essential to have so much back-up. There was a very long day stretching before them with more patients they had seen in a day in more than a hundred years. Junko's reiatsu that usually snaked about the hospital focused itself in the trauma room. The effects it gave to particular patients ranged from mild anxiety management to complete sedation. The nurses were aware Junko would be leaving at any time that day for the games and had been prepared beforehand to tend to such matters. For the moment, it felt as if the room was filling itself with her essence. Everyone within would feel calmer, more at ease, though also more focused on the task at hand. The two patients were forced into complete sedation. Although they could fight it, leaving true drugs on hand just in case. Neither needed their hearts pumping any faster nor needed the shock of both the pain and sight of what had occurred.
Two of the nurses would be in charge of maintaining the barriers while they were still needed. With how quickly they arrived it would not be very difficult to reattach the arms with no issue however every moment they spent in a statis rather than out in the open was less damaged and dying tissue that needed to be repaired and less blood loss. The remaining three nurses were there to help them with the placement of the limb as well as to help jumpstart the reiatsu of both of the men. This would aid with their recovery, mending themselves with their own power, and require less exertion from her and Mizu. Typically this wasn't necessary, but with the day that faced them, Junko had to consider both of their limitations.
The barrier of the right arm of Junko's patient and the left of Mizu's was released, along with that of each patient. One nurse for each would immediately begin with a painkilling Kido. Focusing their reiatsu on the nerve receptors through the crude stubs left of their arms. At the same time, another nurse would focus on halting the flow of blood of both the arms and near the shoulders. Once finished with the painkiller in case Junko's reiastu was fought against, the first would help the other with keeping the two men from bleeding out. With both of them looking at one arm each it was best to begin immediately. Placing the detached arms against the place it was cut, Junko and Mizu would begin with their own Kido. "Chiyudou number forty-eight: Fuka," Junko spoke aloud, more for Mizu than anything else.
Focusing her reiatsu on the bone first, a small layer mixed with the fellow Liuetenet's own to bind it back together. Outward, to the tendons. Veins. Muscles. Finally the skin. focusing on the tethers she created between them, encouraging each layer to bind themselves back together. Once finished the process would repeat again for the opposite arm. Without having to concern themselves with painkillers or barriers the nurses were able to supplement reiatsu to the patients, giving some relief to Junko and Mizu. Once finished with her own patient Junko stepped over to Mizu to examine his work. The nurses began to bind the arms of the men, more for stability than anything else as they still needed their rest. Nearly breathless from both the excitement of the situation as well as the exertion of the procedure itself she looked to her fellow member. "Good job, Mizu-kun," Straightening herself she moved toward the door, gesturing for him to follow her. "we're needed at our assignments. Yui-chan has done this before, please alert her if any changes occur in either of the patients."
With that, she was once more pulling on Mizu to follow her, heading toward the gates then outward into the Rukongai to the medical tent they had been assigned to. Once they had arrived Junko sat down harshly on the rolling chair she found near the entrance. "Are you excited yet?" The grin she displayed was a lie, though one nearly impossible to detect at the moment. Her concerns for her Captain, the patients they were forced to leave behind, the games in general....it was piling up. Yet all the woman could do is compartmentalize what was truly important in that moment and focus only on that. She and Mizu needed to do their best and that was all. They would work hard and by the end of the tournament, everything will have landed as it was meant to. There was nothing to be done now except wait.
